How fairy names work
In old stories, knowing a fairy's true name gives you power over it, so fairies are careful with their names. In our generator every fairy has two:
- An everyday name that anyone may use, made from a word of the fairy's court and a light, quick word: a petal, a bell, a flutter, a whisper. Examples: Budbauble, Meadowbloom, Brambletwirl, Pinewing.
- A true name, long and flowing, made from roots that each mean something, such as Nohedairul ("shy oak"). A fairy tells it only to someone they trust completely.
Our fairies belong to one of four seasonal courts. A court shapes how a fairy looks, what it loves and what it's called. Court titles such as "Pineglimmer Herald of the Winter Star" are for formal meetings, songs and very serious promises.
Fairy names for each court
| Court | Everyday names | With a title |
|---|---|---|
| Spring Court | Budbauble · Larkwhisk · Sprigflutter · Dewpetal · Bluebellwing | Sprigdance Herald of Spring |
| Summer Court | Meadowbloom · Glowfeather · Glowthimble · Honeydrop · Sunthimble | Sundrop of the Sunlit Court |
| Autumn Court | Brambletwirl · Russetbauble · Leafpetal · Figwhisk · Acornfeather | Emberspark Herald of the First Frost |
| Winter Court | Pinewing · Starwing · Mistglimmer · Moonbauble · Silverbloom | Pineglimmer Herald of the Winter Star |
The words in fairy names
Every everyday name joins a word of the fairy's court to a light, quick word. Here are all of them, so you can build a name by hand. In old stories fairies were named after the things they cared for, so a fairy called after frost probably looks after the winter, and one called after honey looks after bees and summer meadows.
| Part | Words |
|---|---|
| Spring Court | Blossom, Bud, Dew, Lark, Clover, Petal, Primrose, Mint, Sprig, Bluebell |
| Summer Court | Sun, Honey, Bee, Rose, Poppy, Meadow, Glow, Lavender, Marigold, Firefly |
| Autumn Court | Amber, Acorn, Leaf, Ember, Bramble, Hazel, Russet, Maple, Fig, Thistle |
| Winter Court | Frost, Snow, Star, Holly, Ivy, Pine, Silver, Moon, Crystal, Mist |
| Second word (all courts) | whisk, petal, wing, drop, bell, glimmer, song, flutter, twirl, spark, shine, dance, bloom, thimble, whisper, light, gleam, bauble, feather, ribbon |
Your fairy name from your birthday
Every day of the year has its own fairy name. The month gives the first word and the court (Winter for December to February, Spring for March to May, Summer for June to August, Autumn for September to November), and the day gives the second word and the title. The same birthday always gives the same name, so you can compare with friends. A few examples:
- 1 January: Frostwhisk, Warden of the Long Night, Winter Court
- 21 March: Budribbon, of the Budding Court, Spring Court
- 15 June: Honeywhisper, Keeper of the Honeyed Glade, Summer Court
- 31 October: Acornwish, Keeper of the Falling Leaf, Autumn Court
Fairy true names
True names are long and musical, with soft vowels and a sound like wind in leaves. Choose Secret true names for a list, or Everyday + true name to see both together. Here are a few: Waidunu, Ulitarae, Pualugha, Miraedano, Marumabaru. Each one shows how to say it, and the 🔊 button reads it out loud.
Tips for naming your fairy
- Use the everyday name at the table. True names are long on purpose. Keep the true name as a secret for a big story moment.
- Pick the court that fits the character. A gentle healer suits Spring, a joker Summer, a wise old fairy Autumn, a cold, proud one Winter.
- Let the name hint at a power. A fairy called Frostwhisper might cool a room when she enters; one called Honeybell might calm angry people.
- Make a promise matter. In many stories, a fairy who gives their true name can never break a promise to you. That's a great hook.
- Great for kids' stories. All our names are gentle and safe for young writers and players.
