About this site

Fantasy Race Generator is a free toolbox for people who invent worlds: novelists, game masters, D&D players, artists and anyone who loves fantasy. It started with one question: why do most race generators only give you a name? We wanted tools that give you a whole people (looks, culture, history, a portrait and game rules) and then let you change, play with and keep what you make.

How our tools work

  • No AI when you press a button. Every result is built instantly in your browser from large word tables, plus rules that keep each result consistent (an ocean race gets gills and coral cities, not desert festivals).
  • No account. Your favourites, saved races and game progress stay in your own browser. You can download a backup at any time on My saved stuff.
  • Yours to use. What you generate is yours to use in your books, games and art, including commercial work. See the terms.
  • Honest about sources. Where we use the free D&D rules (the SRD 5.1 and 5.2), we say so and credit them on the credits page. Everything else is original. Where a number is our own choice, the page says "our default".

How the tools are made

The word tables, guides and code on this site were written with the help of an AI writing assistant, then checked and edited by a person. The pictures are drawn by our own code (no image AI and no stock art). When you use a tool, nothing is sent to an AI: it all runs on your own device.

How we test

  • Every generator is tested with thousands of random results before release: for example 10,000 races checked for empty sections, broken text and grammar slips, and 2,000 monsters checked against their challenge rating.
  • Every page is tested at 21 screen widths, from a folded phone to a 4K screen, and checked for accessibility in light and dark themes.
  • The quiz is tested with thousands of simulated players, so every result can really come up.
