How the quiz works
Every answer adds points to eight traits: courage, wisdom, wildness, warmth, cunning, magic, honour and shadow. At the end, the quiz compares your mix of traits with the mix of each of the 24 races and gives you the closest one, plus a runner-up. The match score shows how close your mix is. The trait chart shows your answers in purple and your race in gold, so you can see exactly where you fit.
The quiz evens out the questions, so no trait wins just because more answers point to it. And every race can come up in your top three with honest answers: we tested it with thousands of simulated quiz takers.
What your result means
- Match %: how close your mix of traits is to the race's own mix. It compares shares, not totals, so a longer quiz doesn't push the number up by itself. Close mixes score in the 80s and 90s, and the score never goes above 99.
- Runner-up: the next-closest race, with its own score. If the two scores are close, you sit between them, and either race could suit you.
- Top traits: your three strongest traits, after the quiz has evened out the questions.
- Trait chart: eight spokes, one for each trait. Where the purple shape (you) and the gold dashes (your race) overlap, you fit. Where purple reaches further out, that trait is stronger in you than in your race.
Tips for a clearer result
- Go with your first instinct. The answer you would really pick says more than the one you think sounds cool. Press Back to change an answer, or use the keys 1 to 4 to answer quickly on a keyboard.
- Take the long quiz. The short quiz uses the first seven questions; all fifteen give the quiz more to compare.
- Know your character first. Before you tick Answer for my character, decide what your hero cares about most. A clear idea gives a clear result.
- Hunting for all 24? The same answers always give the same result, so answer as different people: a villain, a healer, a trickster. Each new result is added to your collection.
Three ways to play
- For yourself: answer as you really are. Fifteen questions give the clearest result; the short quiz takes under a minute.
- For your character: tick Answer for my character and the questions change to "your character". Great for finding a race that fits a hero you already know.
- Creature mode: "What mythical creature am I?" asks its own 15 questions and has 24 creatures, from dragon and phoenix to selkie and will-o'-wisp.

After the quiz
- Make it real: "Create a race like this" opens the Fantasy Race Generator with matching settings, so you get a brand-new original race in the same spirit.
- Play it: for races in the free D&D rules, "Build as a D&D race" opens the Homebrew Race Builder with the traits filled in.
- Share it: download a card for your story or chat, or copy a short text with your result and top traits.
- Compare: send a friend your compare link. When they finish, they see your two results side by side and how well your traits match.
Playing with friends
The compare link holds only your answer choices, not your name. When your friend opens it, the quiz tells them your result and sets the same mode and length, so you are compared fairly. It is a fun warm-up for a new game group: everyone takes the quiz, then you find out who is the elf of the party.
Frequently asked questions
How accurate is the quiz?
It is a fun personality quiz, not a science test. But it is fair: every answer counts, every race can come up, and the trait chart shows exactly why you got your result.
Why did I get Human?
Human is the "bit of everything" result. If your answers spread evenly across all eight traits, you are adaptable, and that is what humans are best at. Try the long quiz for a sharper result.
Can I take it for my D&D character?
Yes. Tick Answer for my character. The questions then ask about your character, and the result links to our D&D tools.
What mythical creature am I?
Choose Creature before you start. Creature mode has its own questions and 24 creature results.
Do you save my answers?
Only in your own browser, so the "collect them all" list works. Nothing is sent to us, and there is no sign-up.
What D&D race should I play?
The quiz can point you to a race that fits your personality, but the best race to play is the one you are excited about. Read your result and your runner-up. If either is a D&D race, look it up in the D&D Race Picker to see its game traits before you decide.
Why do I keep getting the same result?
Your answers decide the result, so the same answers always give the same race. Change a few answers, switch between the short and long quiz, or answer for a character to find new ones.
Is the quiz OK for kids?
Yes. The questions and results are written to be family-friendly, with no gore and no sign-up. Creature mode, with unicorns, phoenixes and griffins, is a good start for younger players.
Does "Answer for my character" work in creature mode?
No. It is for race mode only. Creature mode always asks about you.
