How tiefling names work
Tieflings carry the mark of a fiendish bloodline: horns, a tail, unusual skin and eyes. The free D&D rules (SRD 5.1) say they are about the size of humans, grow up as fast as humans and live a little longer. How a tiefling is named often depends on who raised them. In our generator there are three kinds of tiefling name:
- Infernal names sound old, grand and a little dangerous, built from roots in an ancient tongue, such as Sutis ("storm") or Khemem ("black earth"). A third of them hiss with S and SH sounds.
- Value names (often called virtue names) are words for an idea: a quality the tiefling wants to have, a feeling they carry, or a promise to themself. Many tieflings choose one when they come of age.
- Human-born names belong to tieflings raised by human parents, often with a family name from a village or trade, such as Wilwin Fairbourne or Berwyn Northmere.

The sounds of infernal names
Infernal names are built from old roots, each with a meaning. Knowing a few lets you make your own, or explain your name at the table: a tiefling whose name starts with Maat carries the word for "balance", one whose name starts with Zess the word for "quick". A sample:
| Root | Means | Sound |
|---|---|---|
| Amun | hidden | ah-moon |
| Nab | prophet | nab |
| Sek | power | sek |
| Tem | unity | tem |
| Maat | balance | maht |
| Kha | life-force | kah |
| Neb | lord | neb |
| Zar | prince | zar |
| Hessi | river reed | hes-see |
| Issa | warm stone | is-sa |
| Zess | quick | zess |
| Shenn | swamp | shenn |
Find your value name
The game under the list asks what your character cares about most and shows six value names for that idea. A value name is a choice, so think about why your tiefling chose it. Was it a hope for the future, an answer to people who expected the worst, or a reminder of something lost? A tiefling called Mercy who has never shown any is a very different character from one who shows it every day.
Female and male tiefling names

- Male infernal names: Khemem, Ninuos, Sekkhaem, Akhek, Veshess, Vassolash, Khaem, Shenness.
- Human-born names: Wilwin Fairbourne, Berwyn Northmere, Norric Deepstead, Tamis Millhill, Oswin Thornbrook.
Tips for naming your tiefling
- Pick the name your character would pick. A tiefling who embraces their heritage keeps the infernal name; one who rejects it might choose a value name instead.
- Use two names. An infernal birth name and a chosen value name give you a secret to reveal later in the campaign.
- Let the value name create tension. A warlock called Faith or a rogue called Truth will always have something to prove.
- Think about the family. Tieflings often appear in human families, so a plain human-born name can be the most surprising choice of all.
- Say it out loud. Infernal names can be long. Check the respelling, or press 🔊 to hear it.
