Which name generator do I need?

  • A name for my D&D character or an NPC: the D&D Name Generator covers 24 races in four styles (common, noble, villain, funny), with first names, family and clan names, and a meaning for every name.
  • A name for a whole people or species: the Fantasy Race Name Generator names the race itself, in ten sound styles, with a word for "people" in their own tongue.
  • A name for a knight or a paladin: the Knight Name Generator adds a home, an epithet, a coat of arms and a motto; the Paladin Name Generator adds a holy epithet, an order and an oath with three vows.
  • Everything about one race's names: our race pages go deeper, with that race's own customs and a game: Dragonborn, Halfling, Fairy, Gnome, Goblin, Tiefling.

How our names are made

Every generator here builds names from small roots that each mean something, plus endings for female, male and neutral names. That's why each name comes with a meaning and a way to say it, and why a list of dwarf names sounds like one family while an elf name never sounds like an orc's. We block the example names printed in the rulebooks and a long list of famous names from books, films and games, so your character doesn't sound like a copy. Nothing uses AI, and nothing needs an account.

Three tips for a name that works at the table

  1. Say it out loud. Every name shows a respelling, and the πŸ”Š button reads it. If you stumble, your group will too.
  2. Let the meaning help. A name that means "line of the forge heat" is a free piece of backstory.
  3. Keep a short version. A long, grand name is great, as long as your party has something short to shout in a fight.
